Trustee Bradford Parkinson Receives 1998 Sperry Award
LONDON (8/11/99) -- Dr. Bradford Parkinson, a trustee of The Aerospace Corporation, has received the 1998 Elmer A. Sperry Award for contributions to the development and early implementation of the Global Positioning System (GPS).
Established in 1955, the Sperry Award recognizes engineering contributions that have advanced transportation by land, sea or air.
Parkinson was recognized for nearly three decades of contributions to GPS. The presentation was made in London June 12.
The award is given by the Elmer A. Sperry Board of Award under the sponsorship of a number of professional societies: the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Parkinson is the Edward C. Wells Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University.
He is a graduate of the Naval Academy and a distinguished graduate of the Naval War College. He holds a master's degree from MIT and a doctorate from Stanford.
