EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (12/8/99) -- Dr. Ivan Getting, the founding president of The Aerospace Corporation, has received the Navy's Superior Public Service Award. The awarded was presented in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 17 at a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Navy Studies Board of the National Research Council.

Getting, who was president of The Aerospace Corporation from 1960 through 1977, was recognized by the Chief of Naval Research, Rear Admiral Paul G. Gaffney, II, "for his outstanding record of lifetime support to the United States Navy's science and technology program, for his leadership in the fields of submarine, missile, and space research, and for his patriotic commitment to the national defense."

Getting formerly was a member of the Navy Studies Board and before that was a longtime member of the Undersea Warfare Committee of the National Academy of Science. While serving on these panels, he provided leadership on projects such as the development of submarine-based strategic missile systems and the GPS satellite-based navigation system.
