Dr. Ivan Getting Recognized as Space and Missile Pioneer

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (10/26/98) -- Dr. Ivan A. Getting, the founding president of The Aerospace Corporation, has been inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame at Peterson AFB, Colorado Springs.

Dr. Getting received an awards citation from Lt. Gen. Lance W. Lord, Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) vice commander, at a ceremony Oct. 2 at AFSPC headquarters. At a dinner the same day portraits of Dr. Getting and two other inductees were unveiled. The dinner was hosted by Gen. Richard B. Myers, commander, AFSPC. The portraits were placed in the headquarters building with the likenesses of 12 others previously inducted. The names of inductees are inscribed on a trophy.

Dr. Getting was recognized for contributions to the Air Force Scientific Board which he helped found in 1946, the development of radar and military systems for command and control during the 1950s, advances in ballistic missile and space technology, and for his conceptual work and advocacy that were instrumental in the development of the Navstar Global Positioning System. He stepped down as president of The Aerospace Corporation in 1977 and now holds the title of president-emeritus.
