The Aerospace Corporation Announces
Election of Barbara Barrett to Board of Trustees
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (3/10/06) -- Businesswoman Barbara Barrett, with leadership and management experience in the public and private sectors, has been elected to The Aerospace Corporation’s board of trustees. She was elected today to a three-year term during the board’s quarterly meeting held in McLean, Va.
Besides serving as president and CEO of Triple Creek Guest Ranch in Montana, she serves on the corporate boards of Raytheon Company and Exponent, Inc. She is chair of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy and a member of the U.S.–Afghan Women’s Council, as well as the Pentagon’s Defense Business Board.
In addition, she is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the senior advisory board of Harvard University’s Institute of Politics, and is on the board of the Center for International Private Enterprise.
Barrett, an Arizona resident, was the founding chair of the board of Valley Bank of Arizona, and is the immediate past chair of the board of Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management, at Glendale, Ariz.
During the 1990s, Barrett served as president and CEO of the American Management Association in New York City. Later, she was a teaching Fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics. In July 1999, under a Harvard/Oxford University program, Barrett taught young political leaders at the Moscow School of Political Studies in Russia and participated in a U.N. fact-finding mission in Bulgaria, Slovakia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and other Southeast European countries.
In the 1980s, Barrett, an instrument-rated pilot, was vice chair of the United States Civil Aeronautics Board. Later she served as the first woman deputy administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration.
She also served on the President’s Advisory Committee on Trade Negotiations and was chair of the Arizona District Export Council. She was the president of the International Women’s Forum, a 3,500-member global organization of top women achievers, and was a member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.
Before she was 30, Barrett was corporate counsel for two Fortune 500 companies.
Barrett is the recipient of the Horatio Alger Association’s Distinguished American Award. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as her law degree, from Arizona State University. She also received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the university.
The Aerospace Corporation, with headquarters in El Segundo, Calif., is an independent, nonprofit company that provides objective technical analyses and assessments for national security space programs and selected civil and commercial space programs in the national interest.
