The Aerospace Corporation Presents Top Award
To GPS Expert Joseph Anselmi

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (10/14/04) -- Joseph A. Anselmi has received The Aerospace Corporation's highest award, the Trustees' Distinguished Achievement Award, for "outstanding sustained contributions to GPS attitude control systems' development and operations."

The award was presented by President and CEO Dr. William F. Ballhaus Jr. during a convocation held today at the company's headquarters in El Segundo, Calif.

Anslemi, a senior engineering specialist in the Flight Software Validation Department, has specialized in the analysis, testing and development of attitude control systems for Global Positioning System satellites for more than 27 years, making major contributions to defining requirements, identifying design deficiencies, and validating system performance over the course of 50 GPS launches, including the first.

His innovative thinking and modification of existing control laws and operating procedures have saved several GPS satellites experiencing technical problems on orbit.

Anselmi was instrumental in extending the life of one satellite by four years and enabling the operation of another following reaction wheel malfunctions, according to his award citation.

Anselmi was selected to receive the award by the board of trustees.

In addition to the trustees' award, Ballhaus presented President's Achievement Awards to another employee and members of two teams.

Accepting President's Achievement Awards were Jim V. Anderson, for "providing analyses critical to the Air Force's space operations supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom"; the team of Steve Pavlica and William F. Tosney, for "outstanding leadership in identifying and offering solutions for critical deficiencies in modern satellite acquisition"; the team of Regina L. Lozano, Bruce H. Mau, and Margaret S. Sazani, for "architecting, engineering, and implementing the Aerospace Spacelift Telemetry Acquisition and Reporting System"; and the team of Walter J. Dennis, Dr. Genghmun Eng, Dr. John P. Hurrell, and William M. Jackson, for "technical and programmatic excellence in leading the heterojunction bipolar transistor recovery effort."

The awards convocation is held annually to recognize exceptional achievements that advance the nation's space capabilities.
