Dr. Joe M. Straus is executive vice president of The Aerospace Corporation. He assumed this position on October 1, 2001.
Dr. Straus joined the company in 1973 as a member of the technical staff in the Space Sciences Laboratory. In subsequent Laboratory Operations assignments he served as head of the Atmospheric Sciences Department; principal director, Office of Research and Program Support; and director of the Chemistry and Physics Laboratory.
Following his laboratory assignments, Dr. Straus was named principal director of the Communications Systems Subdivision, was promoted to general manager of the Electronic Systems Division, then was named general manager of the Space-Based Surveillance Division. He was subsequently promoted to vice president of Space Program Operations, Space Systems Group, then to senior vice president of the group. Before being named executive vice president, he was senior vice president of Strategic Planning.
Dr. Straus holds a B.A. in physics from Rice University, where
he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and a Ph.D. in earth and space
sciences from UCLA.
He is a member of the American Geophysical Union, Armed Forces
Communications and Electronics Association, and the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and is a senior member
of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He
serves as the vice chair of the board of the Military Communications
Conference (MILCOM). He also serves on the International Program
Committee of The International Astronautical Federation and is
the chair of the board of The Aerospace Federal Credit Union.
